The Tacoma Defiance traveled to Minnesota undefeated in the month of June and having won 4 of their last 5. This strong form mostly continued through the run of play, winning the xG battle 2.54 to 0.78. However a couple moments of poor set-piece defending kept the scoresheet even at 2 goals apiece at the end of 90 minutes. Then in PKs to decide which team would take the extra point, Defiance looked shell-shocked from the late 88th minute equalizer and didn't perform on either side of the spot kicks.
Within the first minute of the first half, the Defiance showed an aggressiveness towards goal after Gallatin Sandnes put a long ball over the top for Mark Bronnik. Bronnik was able to carry the ball for a 1v1 with the keeper but had his shot saved at point blank range. That start carried through the first 45, where the team finished with 10 shots, 4 of which were big chances according to Sofascore. Though Defiance were the protagonists, Minnesota United 2 got on the scoresheet first in the 30th minute. A free kick from about 20 yards out snuck past a diving Mo Shour but hit the post. Unfortunately the ball bounced right back to Troy Putt, who was able to finish into a relatively open net. Defiance was able recover and found an equalizer 9 minutes later. Through possession, the ball was cycled from left to right, eventually finding Charlie Gaffney on the wing. His cross found Bronnik's head for an easy close-range finish.
The second half played out much the same as the first. The Defiance continued to be dangerous with 5 shots, 3 of them big chances. They also suffocated the Minnesota attack, allowing only one shot. Leo Flores Gonzalez was a substitute in the 62nd minute and immediately made an impact, drawing a penalty on a push in the back after being played over the top by Jasper Winslow. Edson Carli stepped up to slot the penalty cleanly in to the bottom corner, opposite the keeper. While Defiance was dominant, they couldn't extend the lead and the one shot they allowed punished them. Another free kick in the 88th minute got over the backline to Jose Orta Ruiz, who was able to slot it past Shour from close range.
After the whistle, the teams lined up for kicks from the spot. Minnesota United 2 was able to score all four of their first kicks, while they saved efforts from Mark O'Neill and Gonzalez. For all the strong play in regulation, a couple of free kicks and poor execution in penalties results in dropped points.

Stats

Key performers
Mark Bronnik
Mark Bronnik has now scored in 3 straight games and is looking significantly more comfortable leading the Defiance attack as a number 9. He finished the game with 5 shots, 4 of them on target. This dangerous play was highlighted by runs in behind, ghosting runs in the box to finish crosses, and strong counter pressing. It was his most complete performance to date with Tacoma. He has become an integral part of the success of the team as his strong run of form has coincided with a strong run of results.
Charlie Gaffney
The right-sided former academy player is quietly having a strong 2026, with 5 goal contributions in just over 800 minutes. Today he recorded another assist with a pinpoint cross to Bronnik for the opening goal. This assist was in addition to 3 key passes from his position on the night. His combination of pace, strength, and an increasingly improved service has made him a dangerous wide player and is a skillset he can continue to utilize in both right midfield and right back roles.
Gallatin Sandnes
While the team gave up two goals on set pieces in this game, Minnesota United 2 was completely shut down offensively in the run of play and Sandnes was a big reason why. His defensive stats won't jump off the page in this game, but he was exceptionally positioned to make the right clearances at the right time, of which he had 7. He also helped control the tempo of the game, with the most passes on the team (89 successes on 99 attempts). Offensively, he wasn't just settling for safe tempo controlling touches, as he also finished with 3 key passes, looking for long balls over the top to create space for the forwards. He has been the most promising first team prospect on Defiance this season and tonight was an under the radar example of why.
