Cody Baker’s loan to the New England Revolution was made official on Wednesday.
In exchange for sending the 22-year-old defender to New England for the rest of the season, the Seattle Sounders will receive the Revolution’s first-round pick in the 2027 SuperDraft. If certain playing-time metrics are met in 2026, the loan will become a trade, and the Sounders will receive $125,000 in 2027 GAM with the draft pick converting to a second-round pick in the 2028 SuperDraft. The Sounders can also receive as much as $150,000 more in GAM if certain performance metrics are met and will retain a portion of any future sale or trade.
“Cody has represented this club exceptionally well from the moment he joined our Academy,” Sounders General Manager Craig Waibel said in a team statement. “He’s a consummate professional, a dedicated teammate and someone who has earned the respect of everyone in our organization through his work ethic and character.”
The Issaquah native first joined the Sounders’ Discovery Program in 2015 before eventually moving to the Academy. He signed with the Tacoma Defiance in 2021 and earned a first-team contract in 2023 after a couple of impressive performances while on short-term loan. He played nearly 900 minutes with Sounders in his first season, but saw his minutes decline in each of the next two seasons. He had made just three appearances and one start this year.
“As a club, we always want our Homegrown players competing for opportunities in Seattle, but we also recognize how important meaningful minutes are in a player's development,” Waibel said. “This loan gives Cody a chance to continue his growth in a competitive environment, and we’re excited to see him make the most of this opportunity.”
