Ship's Log: Building bonfires since 1975

If that seems a year late it's because Portland didn't bother with soccer until after Seattle invented it

The many ways to build a bonfire

144 meetings across the eras and decades of American soccer. 173 miles between the stadiums.

Not a single inch between the faces of the rivals.

If the 2026 World Cup is the broad awakening of American soccer culture to the mainstream, the I-5 rivalry between Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers is the burning fire that fueled the flames of a league often desperate for attention.

With crowds over 60,000 and massive tifos; marches to matches and bus trips, the Timbers-Sounders rivalry is the American derby experience. These sibling cities cannot stand each other.

In a downtown Seattle still echoing and thriving from hosting the World Cup, the Timbers and Thorns are coming to Puget Sound to face the teams that they insist define them. The Thorns may sell more shirts putting down the Reign than they do supporting their own team – they even released one this week.

Megan Rapinoe and Jess Fishlock embraced the rivalry from day one. 'Pinoe rejecting her college town for her pro one. Fishlock noting immediately how it is to sports hate Portland.

The Sounders bathed those from outside the region in the hate immediately. Montero and Dempsey understood the assignment. Those coming up through The Pipeline are used to beating Portland. Even in the worst days of Defiance/S2 they beat T2 often.

Reign-Thorns and Sounders-Timbers thrum with energy in the stadium. The tension is constant. Table standings haven't mattered. The fans aren't willing to watch a struggle. Blowouts are rare. Timbers last won one of those in April '23 with Seattle winning big in August '21.

It's been a decade since the Sounders won big at home.

The tension and rivalry, along with the much larger crowds, creates a pressure that turns even matches involving mediocre teams into tight affairs. Though Sounders dominated the pre-MLS series, a post-covid four-match winning streak by Timbers pushed them ahead in the MLS standings, 20-19-11. Sounders climbed back, going 2-1-4 since that series of failures.

A summer bonfire is a great way to start a party. Reign need to climb out of mediocrity and Sounders need to re-demonstrate that they are a titan of 2026. Sweeping the rivalry week is a great start to those quests.

What's up with the Thorns?

No longer under the nest of Timbers ownership, the Thorns thrive on the pitch. Portland stumbled a bit before the summer break, earning four points in the last four played. After the break the burst out to a 4-nil win.

Their defense is strong. The attack is stunning. Sophia Wilson is fourth in scoring with Pietra Tordin leading the league in assists. One-time teen standout Olivia Moultrie has 10 goal contributions and is on the leaderboard for both goals and assists.

What's up with the Timbers?

The woeful 2026 experience in Portland resulted in the firing of Phil Neville, with an initial statement that there would not be an interim coach hired until they decided on the permanent head coach. There's still no head coach, though they did promote Timbers 2 head coach Jack Cassidy to run the first team. Cassidy joined the org in January. Neville was the 5th of six head coaches to be fired this season (Miami also made a change).

Neville lost his job because the Timbers are bad at defending counter attacks, defending wing attacks, defending skillful players, defending long shots and stopping opponents from creating chances.

What's up with the Cascadia Cup?

Vancouver Whitecaps beat Portland 4-1 and 3-2 already this year. The Timbers are eliminated without a win.

Seattle and Vancouver each won the Cascaida Cup five times in the MLS era. Portland only won it four times. Seattle has not earned the Cup since 2021.

Defiance

Next match: Sunday at 5 pm PT at San Jose Earthquakes II on YouTube and OneFootball.

Now 60% into the season, Defiance are 11 points off the division lead. The defense is up to being a mediocre 1oth in the league. The attack, on the other hand, is struggling. Only once in 17 games have they scored more than two goals. Scoring leaders Mark Bronnik and Yu Tsukonome are tied with 5 each (former Sounders Academy player Austin Brummet is tied for 5th in the league with 8).

Tacoma is underperforming their xG by nearly 7 goals. Bronnik is the bright spot via advanced metrics. After his slow start the forward is now the G+ above average per 96 leader among regulars, fueled by strong receiving numbers. Xavi Gnaulati and Rafael Jauregui are the stabilizing forces on the team. All three came from outside the org, as The Pipeline continues to accelerate to the First Team.
