Coming off of short rest after their 2–1 loss away against the Portland Timbers, the Seattle Sounders went on the road to start their Leagues Cup title defense against Toluca. Short-handed, with five players on short-term loan from Tacoma Defiance, the Sounders were sent home with their tails between their legs having lost 3–0 at altitude, a scoreline that was actually quite kind.
Things got off to a particularly bad start, with an early goal from the first moment of any sort of danger. In the 3rd minute after Nouhou had cleared a ball out for a corner, Jesús Gallardo never got picked up by a defender and had a clean run to meet the ball at the front post to head it home. With the lead, Toluca continued to assert their superiority. Never letting perfection be the enemy of ‘good enough’ the hosts rattled off 20 shots in the first half, seeing any opportunity within about 40 yards from goal as a shooting opportunity. Stefan Frei was credited with 9 saves in the opening 45 minutes, and 16 on the evening.
Seattle did have a decent chance for a response not long after Toluca’s opener, though. In the 17th minute Jesús Ferreira found himself on the ball approaching the final third with Osaze De Rosario making a dangerous run. Ferreira played a fantastic pass that split the defense and allowed De Rosario to run in on goal, but waited too long to try to chip goalkeeper Luis García and hit his shot into the GK’s chest.
With the 1-0 scoreline still intact going into halftime, the Sounders actually had another decent look at goal just after the start of the second half. De Rosario demonstrated some skill and control as he evaded a couple of challenges before finding space to shoot from about 20 yards out, but his shot was deflected as it came off his foot and went out for a corner. Brunell had a look from 25 yards out in the 57th minute after similarly evading several defenders with a display of technique, and his well-hit shot forced a save from the ‘keeper that allowed a rebound but he was able to collect it before Paul Rothrock could reach it. That was just about the last positive moment for the Sounders on the evening.
A substitution around the hour mark saw Toluca bring on the two final goal scorers in Helinho and Federico Viñas in the 61st minute. Helinho didn’t have to wait long to make his impact, getting on the score sheet just 3 minutes after entering the game. Midfielder Franco Romero ripped a shot from 30 yards that Frei was able to keep out, but Helinho started following the shot as soon as it was hit and caught Nouhou and the rest of the defense flat-footed as he knocked the rebound in to make it 2-0.
Frei continued to make dazzling saves over the game’s final 30 minutes, but once again in stoppage time his initial save proved to be inadequate. In the 3rd minute of stoppage time Gallardo hit another rocket from inside the area that Frei was just able to get enough of a touch to put it off the bar, but the rebound fell for Viñas to head home and give Toluca the 3-0 win. The Sounders now head home to lick their wounds ahead of their Sunday afternoon meeting with Queretaro FC.

Kalani Kossa-Rienzi starts at right back in place of Paul Arriola, and Jackson Ragen returns to the lineup after his suspension to play next to Stuart Hawkins with Kim Kee-hee unavailable once again. 33’ - Tip! Vega cuts inside again and smashes a right-footed shot that Frei once again dives across and tips away for another corner.
36’ - Framed! Toluca get out in transition and two players with clear looks at goal and a chance to add to the lead instead hit the framework!
45’ - Double-save! Frei is able to block an initial shot from the top of the box, but the rebound falls to Vega whose shot he is also able to block! That rebound also ends up at Vega’s feet, but Kossa-Rienzi is able to poke it out for a corner.
47’ - Shot! Some nice technique on display from De Rosario as he evades a few defenders and fires off a shot that’s deflected off his foot for a corner.
53’ - Deflection. Ferreira gets dispossessed in midfield and Toluca quickly transition, but the eventual shot is deflected off of a teammate and out.
57’ - Shot! Brunell does well to get away from a pair of defenders and finds space for a shot that tests the ‘keeper, but he’s able to stop it and pick up the rebound ahead of an on-rushing Rothrock.
61’ - Subs. Snyder Brunell and Osaze De Rosario are replaced by Alex Roldan and Danny Musovski for the Sounders, while Toluca take off Jesús Angulo and Iván López to bring on Helinho and Federico Viñas.

Quick thoughts
Not clearing the bar: The bar for this game was pretty low. On short rest, at altitude, and with an injury list the length of a CVS receipt, there was only so much that could be expected from the Sounders as they went up against one of the best teams on the continent. The team still failed to clear that bar. Whether it was players repeatedly failing to handle physical challenges — or in the case of Jesús Ferreira, not even anticipating that marginally physical challenges were coming — or not picking up targets on set pieces and runners into the box, a general lack of commitment to make runs to support teammates in and out of possession, or inexplicable attempts to back heel the ball in the hopes that a teammate was maybe in the area, this team failed to meet the expectations for either effort or execution. Stefan Frei is perhaps the lone exception.
Vintage Frei: It wasn’t a perfect performance from Frei, but it was a vintage display as he made a single-game highlight reel that plenty of players would be proud of for a whole season. His 16 saves appear to have set a Sounders club record and possibly tied the Leagues Cup record. It’s a pretty small sample size, but if he keeps it up over the next couple of games there will certainly be questions about whether Andrew Thomas should continue to start when the Sounders return to MLS action. For the record, I think Thomas should keep his spot, but if Frei looks like this I’ll understand where the questions come from.
In search of shooting boots: There are plenty of problems in the Sounders squad at the moment, but one of the issues on the field is clear as day when you look at the stats from this game. Seattle were out-shot 40-4, and while plenty of the Toluca shots were far from ‘good’ shots the fact that the Sounders struggled to get any kind of shots off is unsurprising if you’ve been watching them. Osaze De Rosario was the only Sounders player with multiple shots, having taken 2. Notably Albert Rusnák and Jesús Ferreira both registered 0 shots. Ferreira has actually only taken 1 shot in the last 5 matches, and while Rusnák's taken a few more the lack of real threat from the two seems increasingly less like an in the moment issue of decision making and more like an inexplicable part of the plan.
