To maintain any hope of defending their Leagues Cup trophy, the Seattle Sounders absolutely must beat Querétaro when they play this afternoon. Even then, the Sounders will need quite a bit of help. Last year, no MLS team who lost a game advanced to the Knockout Stage and the Sounders didn’t just lose their opener, they suffered a 3–0 defeat that puts them in quite a goal-difference hole.
Realistically, though, this game isn’t so much about maintaining the illusion of repeating as champs, it’s simply a chance to snap a franchise-record seven-game losing streak. The Sounders have only even led once during this awful run as they’ve struggled to deal with a host of injuries to key players and have so far been unable to find external reinforcements.
In Querétaro, the Sounders face an opponent that has been a bit up and down to start this year. In Liga MX play, they are 2–1–0 with a win over UANL Tigres, but they also lost their Leagues Cup opener 2–0 to FC Dallas. Their top player, so far, has been striker Alí Avila, who has three goals this year and is coming off a campaign in which he scored 11 goals in about 1,800 minutes.
The Sounders will be playing their first home game since the humbling 5–1 loss to the Portland Timbers on July 16, having lost all four road games they played since then.
Notes
- Querétaro has not won a Leagues Cup match since making a run to the quarterfinals in the 2023 tournament, having now lost seven straight.
- The Sounders have one remaining Phase One match after this. They’ll face Chivas on Wednesday.
- Pedro de la Vega is scheduled to be available in this match. The midfielder has not played since Oct. 18, 2025 when he suffered a broken right knee cap.
