I can’t tell you why the Sounders are going to win tonight

I can’t tell you why they’ll lose either; that’s the problem with this season

You're probably not surprised to learn that the Seattle Sounders were tied for the longest winless streak in MLS this season. What you probably didn't know is that of the seven teams with 8+ winless matches, one looks poised to host a playoff game and only three are eliminated from the playoff contention heading into Decision Day.

Looking at unbeaten runs, the Sounders are also near the top of that chart – Schmetzer's team is tied for 4th longest unbeaten run in MLS. Nine teams have a longest unbeaten run of 8+ matches. Two of those are already eliminated from the playoffs.

San Jose, Philly and Seattle are on both lists. Being streaky both ways harmed some teams, but not the Earthquakes. Expanding the list to seven games you get more double-dippers who make the Sounders look Cup worthy.

Being wildly inconsistent and streaky drives up the angst in a fanbase and destroys hope in ways that being mid-table likely would not.

We have seen a team capable of a hot start, capable of a hot late season, capable of a collapse when 4th place was in play and capable of an injury-laden albatross around the World Cup.

They managed to blowout good to great teams this season.

Players have been unwilling to show up against their biggest rivals.

Without a series of results going Seattle's way this decision day, the post mortem will start unusually fast.

We cannot know how they'll do against a team that's become a top-2 rival because the Sounders failed to define themselves in 2026. They cannot even be defined as bad, except by comparing them to their own history.

Whatever Sounders team that shows up tonight is the real one – and it's too late for that to matter.

Seattle's easiest path to the playoffs is a win and then one of Galaxy, Timbers and Colorado not winning. With a draw the Sounders need multiple results to go their way. They can finish as high as 7th and as low as 12th in the West. No matter their result it will be the second worst non-2020 MLS season in the team's history.
