It is likely that the 2027-28 season will be structured with regional pods of teams that play each other twice and face every remaining team once. The intent would be to alternate home and away for the single-match opponents.
That will fix the weird out-of-balance conference-based problem where the Sounders have played Montreal at home now three times in a row, but these are also the only three times the two teams faced off since 2019.
The unbalancing problem was even stronger in last week's New England Revolution v. Sounders match. They hadn't played since 2019. Yes, part of that was due to the 2020 season being truncated and odd.
There's a common refrain that the East is weaker than the West. It's mostly the Pacific Coast fanbases that say this, the ones that almost never watch the East play. Maybe the story is real some years, and others it isn't.
But the excuse for why the myth spreads – the lack of matches between most teams – will likely be gone.
And then we'll be able to answer "What is CF Montreal" with some understanding.
The short version;
- They're owned by a cheesemonger who brought them up from the lower divisions. He also owns Bologna.
- They're about to win the Canadian Championship and are expected to rotate players tonight to help that happen.
- They have one of the worst defenses in the league – by xGA they're 24th worst 2013 to present and by GA they are 21st.
- They're cheap spenders who try to sell talent to survive.
